I was asked to make a bride’s cake and a groom’s cake for a wedding reception recently.  I wanted to make something simple, but elegant.   I’ve only taken one course on cake decorating so I knew that the decorations needed to be quick and easy.  For the groom’s cake I knew just what to do…. make a Kit Kat Cake!  I made a Chocolate Strawberry Kit Kat Cake for my uncle’s wedding and knew how easy it was to put together.  This time, instead of strawberries, I used Oreos!  I also made this cake double layered so I used large Kit Kats and Malt Balls to make up for the difference in height.

Isn’t it gorgeous?  Who knew that a chocolate candies and cookies were so pretty on a cake?  The best part was the reaction the cake received.  Everyone loved it and there were no leftovers!  This cake would be perfect for any occasion!   Most people LOVE chocolate, cookies and candy… so you can’t go wrong!

Oreos and Kit Kat Cake!

This is just a summary of what I did... I used a box cake mix and a basic recipe for decorators icing.
Author: Rachel

Ingredients

  • A double layered cake that is iced with chocolate decorators icing.
  • several King size Kit Kats you will need more or less depending on the circumference of your cake. I used around 10 for a 14 in cake
  • 1 Box Malt Balls
  • 1 Box Chocolate stuffed Oreos

Instructions

  • To decorate you will place the malt balls around the bottom edge on the sides first. Then place the Kit Kats on top of that (Not all Cakes bake the same height so you may not end up needing the malt balls for height)
  • Next... use some chocolate decorators icing to make small swirls on the top of the cake where the Oreo's will go. I used a large star tip for this. I started my swirls with one swirl in the middle and added more swirls in a circle around the middle swirl. Then just repeat until you work yourself to the edge. If you are using a smaller cake size you will not need as many Oreo's and swirls. Place an Oreo on top of each swirl.
  • Enjoy!

I am merely an amateur….One year my daughter wanted an almond joy cake. http://www.flickr.com/photos/imthinkingoutloud/5066774317/
We severely overdid the candy portion, what is in the photo was only part of it. We didn’t eat almond joy candy for like a year!
Another time, she wanted a golden oreo cake. No problem. I thought crumbling the oreos would be awesome for the top. Until it came time to blow out the candles. When the oreo crumbs came flying at me and the camera for a great one chance shot:

She wanted red velvet….which we decided would be blue velvet with a Dr. Who theme…cupcakes this year. Until we saw your lovely delish cake on a day we both just happen to be craving chocolate. We have 9 days to decide which way we will go with this years birthday. If this wins the coin toss, I will post a photo 🙂

Oh please do post a photo if you do! You might want to take the Oreos off before lighting candles this time. Lol. Hope it all works out whatever you decide!

I made this cake for my husband’s birthday and found one big flaw. A two layer cake isn’t even close to tall enough for kitkats and whoppers. I had to put a layer of Oreos on top of the cake and a VERY thick layer of icing over that and it still wasn’t tall enough. So I arranged the kitkats around and tied them in place with a piece of chocolate colored satin ribbon (makes the cake look very tailored). Then I piped some frosting around the bottom edge of the kitkats to hold the whoppers in place since there was no longer a way to attach them directly to the cake like in your picture. The overall result looks nice, but I had to do a lot of quick thinking and improvising to get there. If I ever do this cake again, I will make it in three or four layers, not two.

Hi Felicia, I’m glad you were able to work it out. My cake was a 14 inch cake like a stated in the directions so I am assuming that is why yours wasn’t as tall. Since I had never tried this cake with any other size cake pan I didn’t know that it wouldn’t be as tall. Also different cake mixes give different results.

With a knife just cut off the jagged part. Once they are on the cake they are less noticeable.

Hi, this looks great! What kind of pan did you use? If I want to do it the same way, will a 14 in x 3 in cake pan work? I’m not a very experienced cake baker : ) Thanks!
