Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments are so easy and frugal that you can make them for everyone on your Christmas list!

There are many hot cocoa varieties to choose from or you can make your own mix.  In addition to the hot chocolate is the ornament that can be used again and again.  Hot Cocoa Ornaments are basically two gifts in one!

This Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments tutorial has affiliate links which support this site.

Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments

Sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect Christmas gift to pass out for co-workers, teachers, and neighbors etc.  I just love simple homemade Christmas gifts like these Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments.  These are such a cute way to give everyone on your Christmas list a handmade item this Christmas season.

Grab the FREE printable Hot Cocoa Mix gift tags with directions below when you sign up for emails!

Hot cocoa filled ornaments

I decided that I wanted to make several varieties.  Not everyone I know loves chocolate so there is the wonderful white chocolate version too!  The options are endless and there is so much room for creativity!

Hot cocoa mix ornaments with chocolate dipped candy canes

Moreover there are many ways to gift wrap the ornament.  I like to wrap them together with a mug, candy canes and a dipped spoon!

Hot cocoa mix ornaments

Hot cocoa on a winter day is so comforting!

I also like including a mug and a chocolate dipped spoon or candy cane!

Here are some Christmas mugs I love:

Pouring hot cocoa mix into cup

I used clear plastic “craft” ornaments from Walmart.  I checked into these ornaments and they say that you can put candy in them so they should be okay for Hot Cocoa Mix, but do your own research.

Find the Disk Ornaments here! (affiliate link)

These are 3.15 inches and have a 1/2 inch opening. Sometimes you can also find these in the craft sections at Walmart and Hobby Lobby.  Just make sure they are disk shaped and not round so that you don’t need as much mix to fill them.  If all you can find is the round shaped ornaments then use a smaller size like 2 1/2 inches instead of 3.

Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments

Author: Rachel

Ingredients

  • 1 single serving package instant hot chocolate mix in the flavor of your choice... all of the varieties I used are pre-made from various brands. Here you can get Swiss Miss Brand
  • sprinkles
  • chocolate chips or white chocolate chips, peppermint chips, etc. - affiliate link
  • Jet Puffed Mallow Bits Kraft Brand - usually can be found by hot chocolate mixes
  • tag or note on how to make the hot chocolate (see the post on how to sign up for the printable) note should say: mix with 8 oz. hot water
  • mugs are optional

Instructions

  • First start with a clean ornament and take the top off. Fill each ingredient into the ornament using a funnel. Start with the hot cocoa mix, sprinkles, chocolates and lastly the mallow bits. Put top back on. You will need to deliver these standing upright or wrap the top with plastic wrap to keep contents inside. It's ready to go. Just gift it alone or with the other items recommended! Easy and fun!

Notes

clear plastic fillable ornament. I suggest finding ones that are meant to be filled with hard candies like these disk ornaments (affiliate).  They should be around 3 inches which is the perfect size for one hot cocoa mix packet.

I don’t know if I’d be able to leave this on the tree. Hot chocolate goes fast around my house. I go upstairs for 5 minutes and my own cup is even gone! Thank you for the tips though.

They were the ones that are flat on two sides… so they are not completely round. I didn’t see the different sizes, but i did see different shapes. Sorry I am not much help there! If you get the ball shape then i would go small. Thanks!

Thanks! I did get the ones that are flat on each side, they came in 2 sizes but the smaller ones turned out to be perfect size. I was lucky enough to get the amount I needed, these are a very popular item. Looking forward to making these with my 8 yr old daughter and giving these as gifts to her classmates!

We made these for teacher gifts. I got the hot cocoa with the marshmellows already in it from walmart, then from the dollar tree the soft peppermint candies, and snow caps. Then the ornaments from michaels .50 each of the plastic round clear ornaments. They also have th big ones for 50% as well currently .79 cents each. Then I went to A.C. Moore (because I was originally looking for the ornaments) they have the scrapbooking christmas rub ons for .25 EACH! normally 1.00 each. I got 4 packages of those and I put them no the outside of the ornaments so they can wash out and reuse the ornament as a ornament. I took a silver sharpie and wrote the teachers names on them too. came out sooooo cute. My son is taking them to school tomorrow.

I do wash them. Warm water and dish soap and you can shake it inside or use a very small brush to scrub with. Then rinse out a couple of times and dry them with the top down. Mine have always dried just fine.

I have a few questions. I can’t figure out what you used for the red and white bits and the little round white balls with the sprinkles. Can you let me know?
Also, have you tried round plastic balls? Lastly, are the marshmallows dehydrated? I saw some large packs online.
Great idea by the way! My craft group will be making these in December. We’re excited!

Great idea, I am going to make these!!! Talked to a few of my friends and they don’t like hot chocolate, sooo I am going to use instant coffee, or powdered moca coffee & some of the instant brands that are out and it will be a special flavor for everyone!!! You can get a box of the hot chocolates Land o lakes at Costo, also the dry flavored coffee in many flavors too!!! Michael’s charge less for the ornaments, the lil’ candies are called Jimmy’s, right now you can get them in flavor, they run about $4.00 for a large bottle…I have found them at Michael’s, 99 cent city (only $1.25 there), my grocery stores, their all in the cake sections!!! Hope I have helped!!!

How do you keep the hot chocolate mix from clinging to the inside of the bulb (in spots)? I’ve made two and they look awful. I’ve thoroughly cleaned the inside and outside, and have let them sit a week, upside down, drying. No moisture in there at all. Tips??? Please???

      Hi Tara,
I really don’t know, but I have had times where there was a bit of static cling on the inside myself. I’ve never had it actually stick to the inside though. When I am drying out my ornaments I can sometimes roll up a paper towel and wipe it the best that I can without totally dropping the towel inside. If I get static cling then I wipe the inside again once the powder mix is inside before adding the rest of the ingredients. That might help. Hope you can figure it out!

Great idea! But I’ve searched everywhere on the Internet, and every site where these clear ornaments are available indicate they are NOT food safe. Can anyone tell me where they successfully found food-safe ornaments? (Don’t trust the ornaments for food use, simply because the descriptions say they can be filled with candy. They are selling a product.)

Thanks to anyone who can help me out in my search.

Help! I am confused by the “food safe” issue. I have purchased plastic ornaments from Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby. Neither say “food safe” nor do they say they are not “food safe”. How can I tell if they are ok to use for this project? What could be harmful in using them?
