Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments are so easy and frugal that you can make them for everyone on your Christmas list!
There are many hot cocoa varieties to choose from or you can make your own mix. In addition to the hot chocolate is the ornament that can be used again and again. Hot Cocoa Ornaments are basically two gifts in one!

I decided that I wanted to make several varieties. Not everyone I know loves chocolate so there is the wonderful white chocolate version too! The options are endless and there is so much room for creativity!
Moreover there are many ways to gift wrap the ornament. I like to wrap them together with a mug, candy canes and a dipped spoon!
Hot cocoa on a winter day is so comforting!
I also like including a mug and a chocolate dipped spoon or candy cane!
Here are some Christmas mugs I love:
I used clear plastic “craft” ornaments from Walmart. I checked into these ornaments and they say that you can put candy in them so they should be okay for Hot Cocoa Mix, but do your own research.

These are 3.15 inches and have a 1/2 inch opening. Sometimes you can also find these in the craft sections at Walmart and Hobby Lobby. Just make sure they are disk shaped and not round so that you don’t need as much mix to fill them. If all you can find is the round shaped ornaments then use a smaller size like 2 1/2 inches instead of 3.

Hot Cocoa Mix Ornaments
Ingredients
- 1 single serving package instant hot chocolate mix in the flavor of your choice... all of the varieties I used are pre-made from various brands. Here you can get Swiss Miss Brand
- sprinkles
- chocolate chips or white chocolate chips, peppermint chips, etc. - affiliate link
- Jet Puffed Mallow Bits Kraft Brand - usually can be found by hot chocolate mixes
- tag or note on how to make the hot chocolate (see the post on how to sign up for the printable) note should say: mix with 8 oz. hot water
- mugs are optional
Instructions
- First start with a clean ornament and take the top off. Fill each ingredient into the ornament using a funnel. Start with the hot cocoa mix, sprinkles, chocolates and lastly the mallow bits. Put top back on. You will need to deliver these standing upright or wrap the top with plastic wrap to keep contents inside. It's ready to go. Just gift it alone or with the other items recommended! Easy and fun!

Casey
Hi Rachel. i was just wondering what the shelf life is with these.
Tammy @ P K Glitz
Did you find that the top stayed on or did you have to glue it so that they would hang on the branch? Just wondering if the weight of the contents will be too heavy for the ornament?
Rachel
the tops have stayed on for me! I like the ornaments I bought from Walmart in the craft section.
Alicia
Where do find the mallow bits? I would need a med-large size bag for large qty of ornaments
Rachel
I find them at Walmart near the hot chocolate. They come in a container about the size of Parmesan cheese.
Stefanie
What size ornaments are those? My local craft stores have different sizes!
Rachel
I’m not sure what exact size they are. They are plastic with 2 flat sides. Hope this helps. I got mine at Walmart
Reannon
I don’t see instructions on how to make the different varieties. I have clicked just about everywhere possible. Is there a broken link perhaps? I love this idea and cannot wait to try it! Thank you for sharing!
Lila
i can’t find the recipe anywhere…..am i missing something?? It is so cute and i’d love to make lots of these!!!
Rachel
Hi, Lila! I just fixed the recipe widget. it should show up for you now. Thanks! 🙂
Linda Gonzalez
Hi I didn’t see the recipe for the white hot chocolate or the dark hot chocolate. Is it possible to get those recipes as well?
thanks
Jamie
Same here. I see the regular ornament but can not find recipes for the the other varieties.
Rachel Rockwell
I used premade hot chocolate mixes. The brand I used for the white hot chocolate was Land O Lakes. Hope that helps. I just used hot chocolate mix in the varieties I could find plus sprinkles and chocolate chips.
Rachel
Hi Reannon. I just fixed the recipe… looks like it wasn’t showing up there for a while. Let me know if you can see it now! Thanks!
Reannon
Thank you so much. I do see it now and I made a bunch of these tonight! I cannot wait to give them out to my coworkers on Monday.
Diane Herr
Thanks so much for the idea wish I saw this last month when doing ornament favors for a wedding. These will be a great christmas gift.
Renee
What a fantastic idea, I can’t wait to make these!
I have a question, I went to Walmart to purchase the fillable ornaments and they had 2 sizes. Were the ones you used the larger or smaller ornaments?
Rachel
They were the ones that are flat on two sides… so they are not completely round. I didn’t see the different sizes, but i did see different shapes. Sorry I am not much help there! If you get the ball shape then i would go small. Thanks!
Renee
Thanks! I did get the ones that are flat on each side, they came in 2 sizes but the smaller ones turned out to be perfect size. I was lucky enough to get the amount I needed, these are a very popular item. Looking forward to making these with my 8 yr old daughter and giving these as gifts to her classmates!
Rachel
Great! I am so glad that you found them! I will have to remember they are the smaller ones at Walmart. When I went they didn’t have them in different sizes! Hope the class enjoys them!
Mel Lockcuff

Michael’s plastic ornaments are right now 50% off. you can get one for .50 each.
Rachel

Deborah
Very cute gift idea! Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t even heard of craft ornaments before — I love the idea…
Rachel
I just happened to pass them at Walmart and immediately knew what to do with them! Thanks!!!
Jess D.
We made these for teacher gifts. I got the hot cocoa with the marshmellows already in it from walmart, then from the dollar tree the soft peppermint candies, and snow caps. Then the ornaments from michaels .50 each of the plastic round clear ornaments. They also have th big ones for 50% as well currently .79 cents each. Then I went to A.C. Moore (because I was originally looking for the ornaments) they have the scrapbooking christmas rub ons for .25 EACH! normally 1.00 each. I got 4 packages of those and I put them no the outside of the ornaments so they can wash out and reuse the ornament as a ornament. I took a silver sharpie and wrote the teachers names on them too. came out sooooo cute. My son is taking them to school tomorrow.
Rachel
Sounds great! I love the idea of painting the outside!

Wow you really are full of delicious ideas…I think this can be adapted to birthday gifts as well, can’t wait to give it a go!
Debra Ruffing
Rachel these ornaments are not food safe. In order for this to be safe for food you would have to use a food safe container or you would have to wrap all the food safely in bags. Love your blog!
Debra
Rachel
Thanks, I will make note of that on here. I really didn’t think of that, but it’s a good point. I think the ones from Hobby Lobby are food safe.
Jamie
I just wanted to know why they are not food safe? How would I know if the ones I got at food safe or not??
good hot coco
Hi, after reading this amazing piece of writing i am also delighted to share my know-how here with friends.
Patty
Are the marshmallows difficult to insert?
Rachel Rockwell
Not at all… just be sure to get the kind I specified… they are hard instead of soft.
Ella
What kind of cocoa did you use in the white chocolate ornaments?
Rachel Rockwell
I used a pre-made hot chocolate mix. The brand was Land O Lakes.
Dawn
I just found this and want to make them for place settings this year at Thanksgiving. (most of the family cuts down trees & puts them up first week of Dec). Do you have any idea how long these will “stay” or does time have nothing to do with it? Would like to start making them now so they’re all ready. Thanks a bunch. My niece & nephews will LOVE these!!
Rachel Rockwell
They should keep at least a month as long as the mix is kept dry. – Rachel
Brandy
I am not able to find the recipes. I would love to do these for teachers & co workers
Rachel Rockwell
The recipe is located at the bottom. I just used pre-made hot chocolate mixes in different varieties with chocolate chips and sprinkles in different colors. Hope that helps!
Jan
Hi Im in canada! Im trying to make some christmas cash and I love to make things homemade, these are wonderful! If you were going to sell them what price would you charge?? Thanks!
Amy W
Do you wash the ornaments before you add the hot choc? If so, how do you wash and dry them? thanks for the tips
Rachel Rockwell
I do wash them. Warm water and dish soap and you can shake it inside or use a very small brush to scrub with. Then rinse out a couple of times and dry them with the top down. Mine have always dried just fine.
Kayla
Hello!
I love this idea and I’m going to make some for family and friends this Christmas. Just a quick, possibly silly sounding, question. What kind of sprinkles did you use? I’m in the UK so was wondering what would be suitable!
Thank you! X
Rachel Rockwell
The Sprinkles we use here in the US are just like tiny candy… I used all different kinds. They made be called hundreds and thousands or something like that where you are? Here is an example: http://www.mr-sprinkles.com/
Hope that helps!!!
Kayla
Oh that’s brilliant! Thank you ever so much! Hundreds and thousands or sugar strands that we get over here would work brilliantly!
Breanna rth
I absolutely loved this idea!!!! It is definitely a different way to make a hot chocolate kit! I can’t wait to try it this holiday. I featured this on my blog for my hot chocolate kit post with a link here to get full directions because it is such a great idea!
Suzanne Holt
It’s a gift. It’s an ornament. It’s versatile. 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Pinned to my “Having a Natural Christmas” board.

I love these! Is the hot/warm water actually poured into the ornaments ?

These are so cute. Where did you get the ornaments?
Eveline van Heijst
What a great project. I’m already making a shopping list. Thanks for sharing.
Brenda Manley
I have a few questions. I can’t figure out what you used for the red and white bits and the little round white balls with the sprinkles. Can you let me know?
Also, have you tried round plastic balls? Lastly, are the marshmallows dehydrated? I saw some large packs online.
Great idea by the way! My craft group will be making these in December. We’re excited!
Susan
Thank you what a great idea.
Connie johnson
Great idea, I am going to make these!!! Talked to a few of my friends and they don’t like hot chocolate, sooo I am going to use instant coffee, or powdered moca coffee & some of the instant brands that are out and it will be a special flavor for everyone!!! You can get a box of the hot chocolates Land o lakes at Costo, also the dry flavored coffee in many flavors too!!! Michael’s charge less for the ornaments, the lil’ candies are called Jimmy’s, right now you can get them in flavor, they run about $4.00 for a large bottle…I have found them at Michael’s, 99 cent city (only $1.25 there), my grocery stores, their all in the cake sections!!! Hope I have helped!!!
Lisa Lewis
This idea is adorable! We are going to share it on our social media sites. Thank you for using a Land O’ Lakes Hot Cocoa Mix.

We are glad you like our Arctic White hot cocoa mix. Your ornaments are adorable. We will share them on our social media pages.

How do you keep the hot chocolate mix from clinging to the inside of the bulb (in spots)? I’ve made two and they look awful. I’ve thoroughly cleaned the inside and outside, and have let them sit a week, upside down, drying. No moisture in there at all. Tips??? Please???
Rachel Rockwell
Hi Tara,
I really don’t know, but I have had times where there was a bit of static cling on the inside myself. I’ve never had it actually stick to the inside though. When I am drying out my ornaments I can sometimes roll up a paper towel and wipe it the best that I can without totally dropping the towel inside. If I get static cling then I wipe the inside again once the powder mix is inside before adding the rest of the ingredients. That might help. Hope you can figure it out!
Mimsy
Hi, may I ask where you bought the round ornaments for the hot cocoa? I can only find those divided in the centre, not top. thanks
Laura
Did you actually was out the inside of these before you filled them. If so, is there a trick to getting them dry?

What size are the ornaments? The link didn’t work. My Girl Scout Troop is doing the hot cocoa mix ornament for a make-it-take-it craft event for 150 other Girl Scouts on 2 Dec 2018

Great idea! But I’ve searched everywhere on the Internet, and every site where these clear ornaments are available indicate they are NOT food safe. Can anyone tell me where they successfully found food-safe ornaments? (Don’t trust the ornaments for food use, simply because the descriptions say they can be filled with candy. They are selling a product.)
Thanks to anyone who can help me out in my search.

This is a great recipe, one that I will be trying out at home in the next couple of weeks for sure. thank you for taking the time to put it together on this page.

Help! I am confused by the “food safe” issue. I have purchased plastic ornaments from Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby. Neither say “food safe” nor do they say they are not “food safe”. How can I tell if they are ok to use for this project? What could be harmful in using them?

I found mine in the section where all the hot cocoa is at the Supercenter Walmart. The brand was Land O Lakes. This was last year so hopefully they still sell them.

Did you use the 2 5/8″ sized ornaments?
