Lighting Makeover

During the day our living room has great lighting.  We have a BIG window that lets in lots of light.  During the night it’s a different story. The little lamps with the 60 watt bulbs on either side of the couch are the only source of light in that room (other than the flicker of the TV).

Not only are these lights insufficient for the room, but the shades were starting to warp and crack.  We decided that it was time to replace the lighting in our living room, but we wanted to make sure that we replaced the bulbs in the lamps with something more economical and energy efficient.

We went to Walmart to find some new lamp shades, another lamp and some new light bulbs.  They had so many lighting options for us to choose from.   We loved all the modern styles of lamps that they had!

After visiting the GE Lighting website I knew that I wanted to get GE Reveal CFL bulbs.  Reveal CFL’s lasts up to 8 times as long as incandescent bulbs and use 75% less energy.  The Reveal lights also provide pleasing light that enhances patterns and colors!

We ended up getting two packages of the GE Reveal  CFL light-bulbs to replace the lamp lights and also use with our new lamp.  On the package it says that these are as bright as a 100 watt bulb, but use only 26 watts worth of energy!  You can see the rest of my shopping trip on google plus!

So how did it turn out?

Clearly, the lighting transformation is amazing!  The lighting is so beautiful now.  I have found myself being drawn to this room more often just to sit and read or relax than I did before.  It’s amazing how lights can make all the difference in a room.

The light that these bulbs emit is so clean and bright.  It’s not too yellow like the others that we had.

I love the new lamp that we bought for the corner of the room.  It also has some shelves underneath!!!

Our new lampshades look great with everything else in our room.  See how bright just that one lamp is?  It’s the same lamp with different shades and the GE CFL Reveal bulbs!

Even by adding another bulb to the room we are saving energy and money!  I did a quick calculation with the GE Energy Smart® CFL Savings Calculator and according to the calculator I will be saving $13.14 annually and $72.00 over the life of the bulbs!  Go to the calculator to see how much you can save too.

If your not ready to jump into buying CFL bulbs, GE has Energy Smart Soft White bulbs and Energy Efficient Soft White Bulbs that also save on energy and money.   Starting this year… regular incandescent bulbs are being phased out.  These GE bulbs meet the requirements of the 2012 Lighting Legislation.

GE is also putting out a new coupon!!!

I think all too often, we overlook the importance of lighting when creating the right look with a nice ambiance. Of course, we need to concentrate on the vitals such as what type of floor we should have and our comfort is important too. Choosing the right sofa and table all being the main focus of most people's minds understandably but for me the Lighting is as important as your choice of paint.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to consider lighting when designing your living room and bedroom especially. Many of us think of lighting as an afterthought and don’t exactly plan for it, it is more thrust upon them having realized that they need lights.

Equally important are your choice of lampshades and looking out for the ones that match your idea can be as much fun as choosing the pictures you want hung. Without the correct lighting then you can never capture the ambiance you desired that is why it needs to be considered in your early planning.

Some may say well let's see how the room looks then add the lighting. Not such a silly thought apart from it is difficult to predict how this will turn out. Think about colours with lighting as much as you just consider the colour scheme. Some nice ideas in this piece.
