Apple Waffles Recipe with Sweet Cinnamon Butter

Apple Waffles are a comforting fall breakfast food with sweet apples and a touch of cinnamon.  This recipe tastes like the waffle version of apple cake and is simply delicious.

Fall weather just makes me happy.  It’s not too cold yet, but it’s nice to have a break from the summer heat.  I am definitely looking forward to all that Fall has in store and one of those things is fresh apples!

Apple Waffles Recipe

Our local grocers stock locally picked apples and we just love them.  I will be making a lot more recipes in the coming days with them including these delicious Apple Waffles.

Apple Waffles

This recipe comes out light and perfectly fluffy with just a simple baking mix.  We’ve even made them gluten free with a gluten free baking mix and they are moist and delicious!  There is no doubt that this recipe will be made on a weekly basis around here.  I love to top them off with a simple recipe for Sweet Cinnamon Butter.

baking mix

It’s best to start out by whipping up the eggs and butter together in a large bowl.  Next add the baking mix and stir just until batter is mixed.  Using the wet/ dry method will ensure the waffles are nice and fluffy and not too dense.  Also, making sure not to over-stir the batter will help in the overall texture of the completed waffles.

Apple Waffle Batter

Next add the cinnamon and any extra flavorings that you want to add.

Suggestions for Apple Waffles:

  • Try out apple pie seasoning in lieu of the cinnamon.  This will give your waffles a little extra spice including the flavor of cloves.
  • Use orange or lemon zest for an added flavor boost.  I love apples and lemons.  I think it would taste divine in this recipe.
 Apples in Waffle Batter

Tips for using Apples in Waffles:

  • Use diced apples.  Using diced apples gives the most “apple” taste and they don’t add too much moisture to the batter.  I like to leave the skin on the apples, but feel free to take them off.  Once they are cooked up you don’t notice them.
  • Use fresh apples.  This recipe works best with fresh diced apples so that the apples retain a lot of their flavor but still become soft when cooked.
  • Dice the apples evenly. If your diced apples are uneven in size it might take longer for some to cook while the others become mushy.  Keep them diced small (cube size) and evenly cut.
  • Only use the amount of diced apples suggested.  Using too much diced apples will result in a waffle that breaks apart too easily.  We used a small diced apple in recipe which is no more than a cup diced.
Apple Waffles in Waffle Iron

Tips to make the perfect Apple Waffles in a Waffle Iron:

  • Adjust this recipe for your own waffle iron.  We use a small waffle iron and this recipe will give us around 12 waffles from around 2/3 cup of apple waffle batter.  Every waffle maker is different and will use different amounts of batter.  Adjust to your waffle makers directions.  Usually filling a thin layer of batter to cover the bottom works well.  These waffle will rise.
  • Have a stove top waffle iron?  The same above applies to the stove top method.
  • Adjust the time or temperature for your waffle iron.  If you have an adjustable temperature waffle iron set it to the temperature that you usually set it to and adjust as needed.  Most modern waffle makers have a light that lets you know when the waffles are cooked to perfection.
  • Make ahead and freeze for faster cooking in the mornings.  Make extras or make these ahead of time and freeze them for cooking later.  This is a great idea for those on the go breakfasts.  Unwrap waffles and reheat them in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes or pop them in the toaster until crisp.
Fresh Cooked Apple Waffles

This recipe is so easy to make and use up ingredients that are found in a typical pantry.  That’s why we love this recipe so much because we usually have everything on hand to make it whenever we want.  If you don’t have a baking mix like Bisquik handy you can always make your own by mixing :

Baking Mix:

  1. 1 cup flour.
  2. 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder.
  3. 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  4. 1 tablespoon shortening, olive oil, or melted butter.

This is the base for a regular baking mix and will work great for this recipe.  Just double this recipe for baking mix and follow the directions after making your own mix.

I really loved these, but as a man who's only cooking responsibility is weekend pankakes/waffles (my wife is an amazing cook, so I keep out of her way in the kitchen!).... I REALLY struggled to follow this recipe! I had to write it down, then write it over. This is how I think the recipe goes: (I may have got something wrong, because my batter was a little too thick)

In a large mixing bowl, beat: 1 large egg Mix in: 4 tablespoons Oil/butter 1 1/3 cups milk 1 teaspoon Vanilla essence

Then mix in the dry ingredients (best to premix in a seperate bowl): 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons Baking powder 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt

Finally mix in: 1 cup diced apple 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Cook and enjoy.
