Simple Camera Tips Series

So maybe you don’t own a DSLR camera OR maybe you do and don’t know how to use it… then this series is just for you!  Soon you will be on your way to taking dynamic pictures even with a camera phone!

Today I will show you how natural indirect light is a best friend for any camera.   I have also included what photoshop Elements (an  editing software) can do for your photos.  There are free versions, but my suggestion is that if you are serious at all about photography that you buy Photoshop Elements (which is around $70.00 to $80.00)!  Later on this month I will share with you how to use Photoshop Elements too!

Now onto lighting basics:

Here is a photo that was taken with the camera on my phone.  I own an iphone 3 which has a 3 megapixel camera.  This picture turned out pretty poor!!!  It was taken in my kitchen under the lights.  Now let’s see what this rose looks like in the natural light from a window using the same camera…

See how dramatic the improvement is?  It’s amazing the detail that is lost in the picture under the kitchen lights vs. the picture in natural indirect lighting.  Now just for comparison sake let’s see how the DSLR compares with this pic.

Obviously and to no surprise this picture is the best out of the 3 so far, but you already know that a DSLR has the abilities for great photos…  As you can see… with a DSLR you get more details and the light is captured much better.   Let’s see what we can do with a few minor adjustments in photoshop to the phone pic above.

With a few adjustments in Photoshop Elements we are getting closer to a high quality photo.  Granted this IS a 3 megapixel phone camera, but I would say that this picture is pretty good and one that you could proudly display on your blog.   With your typical point and shoot camera the quality is even better!

So we have looked at the different pictures of a still subject, but how does the quality compare when there is a human subject?

As you can see above this is a pretty good photo although a considerable amount of detail is lost around her face.  Let’s see how the DSLR looks for comparison.

The DSLR is again outstanding.  If you own one and are not quite sure how to use it in manual mode… stay tuned!  This was taken in manual mode and its the only mode that I would suggest if you own a camera like this!  This was the pic straight from the camera.  Now let’s see how the 3 megapixel phone pic can do with a few tweeks in photoshop Elements.

As you can tell the detail around her face is a lot better and the facial color has changed for the better too.  There are tons of Actions that you can add to this pic to make it even better, but I will save that for another day!

I hope you enjoyed this post and try it out for yourself to see how your photos improve with natural lighting !

Now its time to see what you have been up to this week!  I need to point out some rules before we begin. (I know I know- we don’t like rules, but they are easy ones that will benefit everyone!)

Great photography tips. When I first started blogging and taking pictures, I thought, use the flash and get brighter pictures. Now, I have my flash turned off all the time. I wish I had known all of this earlier.
