Gingerbread houses make me want to bust out singing “My Favorite Things” from the Sound of Music! I guess it’s because they are one of my favorite things at Christmastime. Real Gingerbread houses are very fun to make, but this year I decided to make something more permanent. This cute DIY Wooden Gingerbread House will last year after year! Make it once and have the kids help you out… then it will be a Christmastime memory they can relive year after year!
I started out with a small wooden bird house from Hobby Lobby. I painted it a brown “Gingerbread” color.
Next I added a little white fabric paint and white glitter to mimic snow on the edges of the house.
For the base I used a wooden scroll plaque that I also found at Hobby Lobby. It’s around 11 inches wide and 8 inches deep. Once the Gingerbread house dried and everything was glued on the house I hot glued it right onto the base along with trees and a few other items. To get the Gingerbread girl and boy to stand up I put a nickel sized amount of hot glue down and then stuck them in. Once the glue was cool I used the white fabric paint to paint the hot glue to look like snow. Cute!
To embellish the house and the whole wonderland… I used various decorations from the “A Tree For Me” line of Christmas products from Hobby Lobby. They had all kinds of tiny ornaments that were just perfect like these little faux gum drops! They also had faux peppermints and a candy garland that I used for around the base. Everything that needed to be glued I hot glued. You can try other types of permanent glues if you don’t want to use a hot glue gun.
To finish the project I found some wooden trees at Hobby Lobby and painted them similar to the house with the snow. Then I added what I had left of the faux candy decorations. You don’t have to do it exactly like mine… in fact it might be hard to find the exact decorations, but hopefully this gets your creativity going! We love our permanent DIY Wooden Gingerbread House!!!
Happy Holidays!!! Hope your season is full of your Favorite Things! 😉
