I just love this new Ombre Romper that I made for my little girl! The “Ombre” look or the “graduated color” look is one of my favorite ways to tie dye.
I was recently given the Tulip One-Step Tie Dye Kit and I just love it! It came with 5 different colors of dye inside of bottles that you just mix with water, gloves, rubber bands and refills of all the colors. I also received a plastic protective table cover from Tulip which was really helpful to have. When I opened up my kit I knew that I wanted to make this romper and I am so glad that I did.
What you will need to make your own:
A plain white romper or white shirt and white shorts (mine were found at Walmart) making the shirt and shorts into a romper will require some sewing.
Ribbon in coordinating color with the dye for straps and matching thread for sewing
Protective Plastic for your surface and paper towels
Since I couldn’t find a plain white romper I needed to sew my own. I decided that by getting a little shirt and shorts and sewing them together would be the best route… so I went to Walmart to see if they had what I was looking for. They sure did! I found a plain white top and shorts set at Walmart in the Garanimals brand.
Since a romper is all in one I had to cut a lot off of the shirt to ensure that she could get it on in one piece. I just cut the sleeves then cut across the top. Then I put the shirt on my daughter to do the rest of the cutting to see where it should come up to.
The rest of it was pretty easy too. I just cut the elastic waistband off of the shorts and also cut the bottom seam off of the shirt… then I sewed them together making sure that the middle of the shorts matched the middle of the shirt. I also made a zig zag stitch to give it a little stretch.
Wash your romper one time in the washing machine and do not dry. This technique calls for the fabric to be wet before dying. To make the Ombre look for the romper I used the Tulip One Step Tie Dye Kit. It came with 5 bottles of different dye colors and refills. I chose the teal color for the romper. I just filled the bottle to the line with water and then mixed it up.
After mixing it I poured the mixture into a clean spray bottle. The trick to getting the Ombre look is to spray one area at a time and gradually make the solution weaker by mixing more water after each area is sprayed. I followed the Ombre Tie Dye video on I Love To Create.
As you can see… adding the water each time made the dye a little weaker as I worked my way towards the top of the romper. This gave it that Ombre look! Make sure that you protect the surface that you are tie dying on and place a layer of paper towels underneath the romper too. Also use plastic gloves while dying or touching anything with the dye on itI left this to sit for 6 hours before I washed and dried it.
After the romper was finished dying I washed and dried it. It came out a little lighter than what it looked like while still wet so take note of this because the longer you let it sit the more concentrated the color will be. After it was washed and dried I put it on my little girl to figure out where the straps needed to be and then measured accordingly. Then I took it off of her and sewed the straps on. Then I was finished!!! It was so easy! I really liked the way that it came out and it looks so cute on my little girl!!! She just loves to run around and play in it!
Do you like the Ombre look? What about other tie dye looks? There are so many versions that you can make with the Tulip Tie Dye Kit… the possibilities are endless! What would you like to make?
