5 Reasons Kids Should Handwrite Thank-You Notes

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Uni Ball. The opinions and text are all mine. #WhyIWrite

My grandmother still writes little notes to me in the mail sometimes. She also hand-writes heartfelt messages in my birthday cards each year too. Her handwriting is unique to her and so I make sure to save those cards and letters that mean so much to me! Her example has taught me the importance of a handwritten note and for that reason that I want to instill a love of handwriting notes in my kids. There isn’t anything wrong with a printed card, but I believe there is still a great importance to teach our kids the value of a handwritten note… especially a handwritten thank-you note. Here is why:

5 Reasons Kids Should Handwrite Thank-You Notes

1. Attitude of gratitude – I believe the most important thing a child – or adult – can learn from regularly writing thank-you notes is thankfulness. Children learn to be grateful for others as they write thank-you notes to friends and family after birthday parties, to teachers and community leaders, to public safety workers, and when others have done something special for them. Writing thank-you notes helps children develop a life-long attitude of gratitude as they look for ways to express thankfulness to others.

2. Improved writing skills – Writing thank-you notes helps children improve their writing skills, especially spelling, grammar, punctuation, and penmanship. Children who are accustomed to having their spelling and grammar automatically ‘checked’ are challenged to write correctly the first time when writing thank you notes. It provides them with an opportunity to learn or improve upon their printing and cursive writing skills. Children can also learn calligraphy as a way to write their thank you notes.

3. Enhanced self-expression – Instead of defaulting to the modern technology of texting abbreviations, emoticons, and 140 characters, children learn to express themselves by writing thank you notes. Children learn to gather their thoughts and put their unique perspective onto paper in their thank you notes.

4. Appreciation for the significance of thank-you notes – With the ever-increasing number of ways we can communicate with one another, nothing compares to a personal, handwritten thank you note sent in the mail or delivered in person. Even in the fast-paced business world, a simple handwritten thank you note is often more meaningful than a thank you via email or typed letter.

5. Promptness – Writing thank you notes not only teaches children to be grateful, as mentioned above, but it also teaches them the importance of being prompt. Thank you notes sent the day after a party or event shows the recipient that expressing thanks was a priority for the child.
