Whenever we go to visit my parents we are always surrounded by a ton of people. This always makes for a fun time, but it can also be a hassle to feed everyone! The kids especially get hungry for snacks and so I came up with this easy Scarecrow Dip Platter and Oreo Crows for them to munch on. They loved it and so did the adults. The Scarecrow Dip Platter is so easy to make and a whole lot of fun too! Not only is it for Halloween Snacks, but it’s also the perfect party tray for Halloween or Thanksgiving! I added the cute little Oreo Crows made from Oreos to the spread and they went perfectly together! Not only was our platter cute, but it was equally tasty!
I prefer to get my Oreos and Wheat Thins at Walmart. I find them easily on the cracker and cookie isle! There is going to be a in store demo at Walmart for both Wheat Thins and Oreos at select locations on October 24th-26th so be sure to check it out!
Everyone in my family loves Wheat Thins so I made the Scarecrow’s hat with them! For the Scarecrow’s hair I used a bag of shredded carrots .
The Wheat Thins were the perfect cracker to use with the Creamy Onion and Bacon Dip!
I used the veggies around the outside of the Scarecrow to look like greenery and fall colored leaves. On the bottom layer was cucumbers and sliced green bell peppers. On top of those I used red, orange and yellow bell peppers that I cut into leaf shapes.
I used 2 olives for eyes and I sliced up some olives into thin strips lengthwise to make the mouth. The nose was an orange bell pepper cut into a triangle. My Bacon and Onion Dip looked great as a face! I put the dip into a shallow plastic flower pot liner that was covered with plastic wrap to ensure it was food safe. You can use any shallow rimmed bowl and I suggest cutting down a cheap one or using the flower pot liner like I did covered with plastic wrap.
- 2 Medium sized onions cut into thin rings
- 6 strips of thick Bacon or 10 thin slices
- ⅓ cup Mayonnaise
- ⅔ cup of sour cream
- *dash of salt for the onions (very minimal)
- First lightly caramelize the onions by placing them in a skillet over low heat for about an hour until they are a blonde/ brown color (use a small amount of salt sprinkled at the beginning). Remove from heat and cool. Meanwhile put the strips of bacon on top of a foil covered baking sheet and cook at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until dark brown and crispy. Once the bacon and onions are cooled down place them both in a food processor and pulse until thoroughly chopped. Take a medium sized bowl and mix the bacon onion mixture with the Mayo and sour cream. Chill and serve cold with veggies and Wheat Thins.
To make the Oreo Crows you just twist one Oreo in half and take out the filling. Cut that piece in half and stick the halves into the filling of one whole Oreo. I used the Halloween Oreos for these. Then use some candy eyes and a candy corn for the beak! So cute!
It was almost too cute to eat, but the Creamy Onion Dip with the Wheat Thins are way too delicious to pass up! 🙂 It’s a great way to get kids to eat their veggies too. This whole platter was eaten in no time and I know this will be something I make often for our get-togethers!
